Part Four: The Green Himalayas
If you think that the Himalayas are just freezing deserts with white giants, think again. The mountains can be as fertile as the plains and valleys. Peaches, apricots and apples are abundant here. In summer, you won't believe how green it can get. Charming stone huts, rich green terraces, rock beds and gushing streams ... this is Nepal too. See how outrageous things are?
Even at 4,200m Periche in Khumbu can be very green in summer. Yaks eat their fill, grazing in the cute little pens fenced with uncemented stones. There are also white, purple and yellow dots on the carpets of grass - wild flowers which administer an intoxicatingly fragrant love potion.
Wow, what luck! This is a rare shot of a Himalayan tahr, a goat-like animal with beautiful horns. I found this one on my return to Namche Bazaar from Everest Base Camp. It is very shy and leaps up near 90-degree slopes like kangaroos. I've never seen another animal so comfortable on such steep and high slopes.
Look at those succulent vegetables! Make good curry, yum yum. But with their standards of hygiene, salads are probably not a good idea. If you are sweaty after a trek, don't hesitate to take a hot "showar". Doesn't matter how it's spelt. Feels great all the same.
